About

Welcome to Flash Frontier: An Adventure in Short Fiction, New Zealand’s flash fiction challenge and competition site.  Here at Flash Frontier, we are building a community of short fiction writers, one story at a time.

In 2012 we began with twelve issues, one each month. Each issue contained stories of 250 words or fewer, and several writers became repeat contributors, one writing every single month.

In 2013 we are moving to a bi-monthly schedule. We’ll publish issues in February, April, June, August, October and December.

Themes and challenges

Each issue follows a theme, and two issues each year are international.

Your challenge is to write a story in 250 words or fewer following the monthly themes which you can find posted on our Themes page. To make the challenge fair, the editors always join in too and demand as much of themselves as they do of the other contributors.

Prizes

In 2012, we awarded four quarterly prizes to writers whose flash fiction demonstrated a degree of excellence we’ve come to expect. See Announcements for details.

In 2013 we will offer two prizes for outstanding writing, one in June and one in December.

What we like

We are looking for variety and originality. Tickle us, haunt us, gobsmack us. Choose your words carefully and leave our readers wanting more.

We also feature art in each issue. Photography, painting, drawing, art installations, sculpture work — we’re open to what you have to share with us.

If you are a writer or artist (published or just starting out) living in New Zealand, or a Kiwi living abroad, please come join us!

Submissions are now open. Go to Submissions for details.

Come find us on Facebook and Twitter too.

  1. Great idea. Love to join you. First contribution is in. Hope I can keep it up in spite of travelling. Have a great year. BarLu

  2. I lived and worked in New Zealand for one year ten years ago. Some of my and my family’s heart is still with you. Do I count as an honorary Kiwi and can I submit? Cheers from Berlin!
